Now and then it’s good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.

Guillaume Apollinaire

Sometimes it’s just good to stop, remember, and celebrate. 2012 was definitely a full year for Community Faith in Action and we would like to remember some of the things that happened this past year with you!

  • Hannah Groth started working part time as an assistant with CFIA and she was able to just jump right into everything going on in Golden these days! Her main focus is communication between community members, whether that’s getting coffee or emailing information. She has really enjoyed getting to know the leaders and community members in Golden.
  • We also really focused this past year on documenting and communicating the various relationships and projects that have added so much value to this organization. We were able to fine-tune our mission statement (To facilitate collaboration and partnership that unifies and supports sustainable change within community), communicate our vision and values we operate under, collect the past 3 years of financial information, combine this and so much more on our new website! We were also able to begin a partnership with an online giving site (, soon to be and also participate in Colorado Gives Day on December 4th.
  • Another significant project we’d like to take time to celebrate is Neighborhood Rehab Project. This started 2 years ago as a one day project with lots of volunteers who had a passion to help their neighbors keep their homes safe, dry, and warm. This year we had over 140 volunteers who worked on over 30 homes and put in over 1,100 hours! We were able to raise about $8,150.00 from grants and private donations to go towards this project day. We developed a website,  to communicate this vision and passion. There was so much need, and so much interest in helping, that we decided we needed several on-going teams to participate in NRP workdays throughout the year! If you have any interest in giving a Saturday every couple of months to help keep residents in Golden safe, warm, and dry, check out our website!
  • We also would like to celebrate our partners and good friends through the Together Church of Golden. The folks that we meet with to plan together, listen to one another, pray for each other have been such a huge part of the heart and soul behind Community Faith in Action. This past year, starting in March, every church prayed for the church designated for that month. This was such a valuable experience to partner with each other’s congregations weekly.  This year we will be praying for our golden schools.  One each month for all the churches to focus on.
  • We can’t forget the Golden Chaplaincy Program success with companies like EDS Waste Solutions, Staging Denver, and the Golden Police Department. Hundreds of hours were dedicated by chaplains in service to employees and their families within these organizations.   It is so wonderful to see how the services of a chaplain are being utilized in the workplace.  We are currently helping Edgewater PD, Wheatridge PD and other agencies on the western slopes create and train for a chaplaincy program.  For more information about these services go to:
  • We are looking forward to a new project and partnership between Neighborhood Rehab Project and the Golden Rotary Club’s Golden Backpack Program! Every weekend during the school year the GBP provides food for 500-600 kids. In the past few years during the summers a free lunch has also been offered at a local elementary school, but an average of 90 kids came, which leaves around 500 kids that normally take food, without. With a release date of July 1, 2013, there will now be an alternative for those extra 500 kids: the Snack-N-Wagon! With a recent donation of an old brewery bus, there are now plans in action to rehab the bus into a mobile food pantry called the Snack-N-Wagon that will go to 2-3 sites each day, Monday-Friday, around lunch time in the summers and provide kids food in their own neighborhoods. There is still much to do regarding this new and exciting project, but we have a great start with lots of great minds thinking through the best ways to feed hungry kids in Golden!

Well, those are just a few things that we want to celebrate with you!

Have a great week!

Summer in the City

I know, it has been a long time since my last post! Thanks for all of you who have been asking me to write more. Great things going on this summer that deserve some ye ha over! First and foremost Jen and I just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary, it has been an amazing ride! In September we are heading to Italy to celebrate in style. Cannot wait to spend two weeks with her exploring the land; Rome, Florence, Tuscany, Calabria etc.

Summer in Golden has been great:

I had the great privilege of accompanying my daughter Courtney at the Golden Police Department Youth Academy where the students learned a lot about the role, work and mindset of law-enforcement. Courtney won the

top gun

award. Yes I am proud of that, watch out gentlemen! I am so honored to be a part of the Golden Police Department, they truly do a great job at involving this community in understanding the significant role they play in our city.

2012 Buffalo Bill Days

Another great year at BBDays! Saturday our chaplain team pulled out the BBQ and grilled up some good meat, thank you Custom Made Meals! Many from the congregations donated side dishes and desserts. It is such a blessing to serve the fine men and women at GPD!

Sunday morning we celebrated our 7th Annual Worship Service in the park! It was a great privilege to be the one who spoke this year! I spoke about “Seeking the peace of the City” from Jeremiah 29:4-14. Challenged the church to accept the circumstances of their lives and bloom where they are planted. We are designed by God to live in the midst of community and invest in the lives of those around us. Often times we find ourselves waiting for a better day, or when we have time, and that day or time never comes. God has plans for our lives and often times we feel like the people in Jeremiah’s day who are in bondage in Babylon. But the truth is God knows and has designed the very time and place where you live and invites you to be involved in the peace and prosperity of the city.

Mayor Marjorie Sloan shared with the church, the Cities decision to give us a matching grant of $2500.00 toward our September 8th neighborhood rehabilitation projects. We will be helping homeowners across our city that day with projects around their homes that focus on creating safe, warm and dry environments. This will be for those who would not otherwise be able to fix up their homes. If you would like to volunteer that day please send an email to Neighborhood Rehabilitation with your contact information and we will get you on the list. We need people of all skill levels. If you would like to donate a tax deductible gift you can mail a check to Community Faith in Action at 1224 Washington Ave. Unit 105 Golden, Co. 80401 and let us know it is for Neighborhood Rehab.

This years BBDays worship band was great, made up of youth and youth leaders from across our city, they did such a great job leading a very diverse group of people in worship of our God!

I am very excited for the future of Golden, and believe we as a community are being called into a new season of serving together. The kind of service that not only gives away fish to those in need, but also teaches people how to fish and find dignity in being a vital part of this city! Until next time, engage your community and practice the values of your faith by moving them into action!

“Do you guys have to pay to do this” Neighborhood Rehabilitation Outcome part 2

September 10th was a great success. The day started with 80+ volunteers and several homeowners from the neighborhood gathering for a look at the scope of the project, a safety talk and prayer. In the middle of the talk a young boy from the neighborhood raised his hand to ask a question and said, “do you guys have to pay to do this”? This is when I realized it was a profound opportunity to be a volunteer in the midst of our city. This young man saw from the beginning a chance to serve that was valuable and worth while. The crowd broke out in laughter and I explained to the boy that we were here to volunteer and care for people because we love our city.
This boy spent much of the day passing out cold water to the workers, asking to run the power tools, yikes…and just talking to people.

The volunteers went on to refurbish seven decks, paint the exterior 4 houses, landscape, tree trim and much more. There were 35 different work sites being addressed and rehabbed. I was so proud of the Together Church volunteers, attitudes were amazing, people went above and beyond! The food provided by a few ladies from the church was so good and well done. The Golden City Parks Department came by later in the week and chipped up all the tree trimmings. EDS Waste solutions donated a huge roll off dumpster and portable restroom at their cost. This was truly a collaborative effort! Thanks to all who contributed financially, in your time and with materials!

This coming Saturday we have our second of three groups coming through to continue the project. These volunteers are coming all the way from Westcliff, Colorado to serve. They plan to do some more painting, deck refurbishing and general remodeling. Following them October 9th we will be partnering with Faith Luthuren Church of Golden and the Golden Home Depot to complete the project and leave this square block changed from the inside out.

The greatest joy we are experiencing in these endeavors is the relationships that are being established in this part of North Golden between the volunteers and the homeowners. It has been so good working with these folks and seeing so many hands make the burden light. Let’s together continue to see where we can serve and make a lasting difference in the city!
